Is your dental implant surgery coming up in the near future? One of the great things about living in today’s world is the fact that missing teeth can be a thing of the past. You don’t need to settle for gaps in your smile any longer thanks to several different tooth replacement options, like dental implants. Implants have so many benefits, including the prevention of bone loss and restoring your chewing power. However, you will need to allow your implants to heal properly in order to experience all of the benefits. Read on to learn some dental implant aftercare tips to help you recover in a timely manner.

Control the Bleeding

Bleeding may continue from the implant site for about 72 hours after your procedure. To reduce this, bite down on some gauze for about an hour. Do this every 6 to 10 hours as needed. You could also try biting down on a moist teabag to allow the area to clot more easily.

Reduce the Swelling

Swelling and bruising are common after surgery. To help with this, place an icepack on your cheek for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Drink plenty of water and try to sleep in a propped-up position.

Manage Your Pain

Just like any other surgery that you may have, you are likely to feel some discomfort afterwards, but it should ease in just a few days. Until then, use an over-the-counter pain reliever that your dentist recommends. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are popular options. Begin taking it just before your local anesthetic wears off. Your dentist may also provide you with additional pain medication if they deem it necessary.

Get Plenty of Rest

Most patients are able to return to work after a couple of days, but you should still take it easy. If you have a job that is physically demanding, you should probably wait about a week before returning. Get at least eight hours of sleep each night. By staying well-rested, the healing process will go smoother.

Keep Your Mouth Clean

You should maintain excellent oral hygiene at all times, but especially after implant surgery in order to prevent infection. Brush and floss as you normally do but ignore the site of the implant. After meals, rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater rinse.

Eat Soft Foods

After your implants have completely healed, you can eat whatever you want. But until then, you should stick to a soft diet. Chew on the side of your mouth where your natural teeth are located and avoid hot foods and beverages.

Don’t Smoke or Drink Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages and smoking can negatively affect the healing process. Stay away from alcohol for at least 72 hours and don’t smoke for at least two months following the procedure.

By following these tips and seeing your dentist for a follow-up appointment, you will be back to normal in no time. This way, you can show off your new and improved smile with pride!
