It\u2019s caused by bacteria in plaque that\nbuild up due to not maintaining proper oral hygiene habits like regular\nbrushing, flossing, and dental cleanings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any symptoms of gum disease should immediately be reported\nto your dentist. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bleeding when brushing or flossing <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red, swollen, or tender gums <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Persistent bad breath or bad taste in your mouth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. It\u2019s\nthe easiest stage of gum disease to treat, and can even be reversed since the\nbone and tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected. By brushing\nand flossing more, and avoiding smoking and sugary foods, you can reverse\ngingivitis in Bella Vista at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into advanced gum\ndisease, or periodontitis. Your gums may begin to recede from the gumline and\ncreate pockets for bacteria to grow. Eventually the inflammation can destroy\nthe fibers that connect your teeth to your gums. Your teeth can loosen and even\nfall out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I Need a Periodontal Deep Cleaning?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the American Academy of Periodontology, you\nonly need a deep cleaning when X-rays show bone loss and you have at least one\ngum pocket greater than 4 millimeters deep. When your gum disease has worsened\nto the point of periodontitis, better oral care habits at home are not enough,\nand you will require further treatment in your dentist\u2019s office. However, for a\nmore advanced stage, you will need a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and\nroot planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Scaling?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scaling is the process where your dentist will remove plaque\nand tartar, or hardened plaque, from both the surface of the teeth and the area\nbetween your teeth and gums. This procedure can utilize either manual scaling\ntools or ultrasonic instruments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Root Planing? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Root planing involves using a scaling instrument to remove\nplaque and tartar from the surface of the roots of your teeth, below your\ngumline. Once both of these procedures are done, you may need a second\nappointment to follow up on how your gums are recovering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can I Expect After a Periodontal Deep Cleaning?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the procedure was a success, then the bacteria in the\npockets of the teeth will be removed. By practicing good oral hygiene habits\nlike brushing and flossing every day, your gums will ideally become healthier\nwithin a few weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Periodontal deep cleanings may not sound like fun, but there\nare a lot more enjoyable than losing teeth!
