Common Causes of Tooth Pain

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the inner layer of the tooth, known as the dentin, becomes exposed. When the tooth is exposed to temperature changes or sweet or acidic foods, there is often some pain. The sensitivity can come and go overtime. However, just because the pain has subsided does not mean there is not a larger problem. In some cases, you may experience severe tooth pain that appears to have occurred overnight. Severe tooth pain can be an indication of an infection, known as a dental abscess. Often, a dental abscess causes a severe throbbing pain, which can extend to the sides of the face and other teeth. In some cases, you may even see a pimple-like bump appear in the mouth. Sudden, severe pain could be a sign of an abscess which is considered to be an emergency and requires prompt care.
Other times, tooth pain may be a bit more obvious, such as if a tooth has cracked, chipped, or broken. Often, you will experience a stabbing pain when placing pressure on the tooth. If you are having a stabbing pain, even if you cannot see any visible signs of damage, you need to call our office so we can restore the health and function of the tooth.
Tooth pain can be caused from unrelated complications as well. For example, a sinus infection can lead to tooth pain. Bruxism, which is grinding of the teeth, may also cause the teeth to become sore. While the tooth itself is not the cause of the pain, either of the underlying conditions will require treatment to stop the pain.
